Semrush reports your position on a results page. AnswerRank reports whether ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI name your brand when a buyer asks them what to use, on $29 a month with every feature on one plan.
Semrush is built on a results page. It records the position a URL holds for a keyword, the estimated traffic that position earns, the backlinks pointing at it and the technical faults that hold it back. That model describes a page with ten organic slots, where being third is a good commercial outcome and being eighth still earns clicks.
An assistant answering the same query composes a paragraph. It retrieves a handful of sources, weighs what it already holds in model weights, and names two or three brands. The eighth-best option is absent rather than lower down. Impressions, average position and click-through rate all describe a page the buyer never opens, which is why answer engine optimization measures presence in the answer instead.
Semrush added AI visibility tracking and sells it by prompt volume, so this is not a case of an incumbent standing still. The practical difference is packaging. Prompt tracking sits inside a suite of more than fifty tools, priced by how many prompts you may track each day, on the plans above the entry tier.
A rank tracker records that a URL moved from position six to position four. It records nothing when an assistant answers the same question by naming three competitors.
Retrieval comes first. When a question needs current information, the engine runs its own search, fetches a small set of pages and reads them while composing. OAI-SearchBot builds that index for ChatGPT, PerplexityBot does the same work for Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews draw on the main search index. A page blocked from these crawlers cannot be retrieved, whatever its ranking.
Training weight comes second. Models absorb text during training, and a brand described consistently across documentation, reviews and independent coverage becomes part of what the model knows without any retrieval step. GPTBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended feed that corpus. Blocking them removes you from future models while leaving today's citations untouched, which is the single most common misconfiguration we find.
Corroboration decides the rest. Engines prefer claims they can source from somewhere other than the vendor. A comparison table on your own site carries less weight than the same claim in a G2 review, a Reddit thread or a trade publication, which is why third-party surfaces matter more in answer engines than they ever did for classic rankings.
The share of tracked buyer questions where an assistant names your brand. The nearest equivalent to share of voice, measured inside the answer rather than across a results page.
Answer engine optimization and generative engine optimization describe the same practice, making a brand the one an AI assistant recommends. AEO is the more common term in software, GEO in academic writing.
A crawler that opens your page live while a user waits, such as ChatGPT-User or Perplexity-User. Blocking one prevents an assistant from reading your page even when a user asks it to.
A query resolved inside the assistant with no visit to any website. The recommendation still happens; the traffic that used to prove it does not.
A proposed file that points language models at the documentation you want read. Adoption is partial and it does not override robots.txt, so it supplements crawler configuration rather than replacing it.
A source link an engine attaches to a claim. Citations reveal which pages an engine trusts in your category, which makes them a target list rather than a vanity metric.
Your buyer questions run on a schedule across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI answers. Each run records whether you were named, in what position within the answer, and alongside whom. The result is a tracked line per engine, so a shift in one model's behaviour is visible as a shift in one line.
Every answer naming another brand is recorded against that brand. Over weeks this produces a ranked table of who the engines reach for in your category and on which questions, which is the answer-engine counterpart to a competitive keyword report.
An MCP server ships with every account. Connect Claude, Cursor or another client and query your answer share, citations, content gaps and link opportunities in plain language, inside the tool where the work happens. No export step and no dashboard left open in a second tab.
Journalists and podcast hosts publish requests for sources daily, and each one expires on a deadline. We match live requests against what your brand knows, score the fit out of ten, show the publication, the deadline and the route to reply, and draft a starting point you edit and send.
Assistants quote Reddit threads, Stack Exchange answers and niche forums heavily on buying questions, because those pages read as first-hand experience. We surface the threads in your category that engines already cite, with the subreddit, the age of the thread and what it asks.
Findings are ordered by expected effect on answer share, each with the reasoning attached. Schema that makes a page quotable, an FAQ answering a question no brand owns, a crawler rule quietly excluding you from citation. Each item names the change and the effect to expect.
ChatGPT splits into two modes that behave differently. Its search mode retrieves live pages through OAI-SearchBot and cites them inline, so a new page can appear in answers within days. Without search, it answers from model weights alone, where visibility follows training cycles and changes on a scale of months.
Perplexity retrieves for almost every query and shows numbered sources, which makes it the fastest surface to move and the easiest to audit. A page it cites is a page you can inspect, and a competitor's citations there usually reveal the exact article or thread carrying their recommendation.
Claude retrieves selectively and leans harder on documentation and primary sources when it does. Google's AI Overviews sit on the main search index, so classic technical SEO still governs eligibility, and a page excluded from the index cannot appear in an overview. Gemini blends the two, drawing on Google's index alongside its own training.
Tracking all five separately matters because they disagree. A brand can hold a strong position in Perplexity through one well-cited comparison article while remaining absent from Claude, and the fix for each is different. AnswerRank records answer share per engine rather than averaging them into a single figure that hides the disagreement.
Most robots.txt files were written from a template that predates answer-time fetchers. Run the free crawler check, confirm that OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and ChatGPT-User are allowed, and decide separately about GPTBot and Google-Extended. This step frequently moves visibility on its own, because a blocked fetcher is an absolute ceiling.
Twenty to forty questions in the buyer's own words beats two hundred keyword variants. Include the comparison questions, the alternatives questions and the two or three objections that come up in every sales call, since those are the prompts a real buyer types.
The first run shows which pages the engines already quote in your category. That list is usually dominated by review sites, forum threads and a handful of independent guides, and it tells you where a placement changes the answer rather than where a backlink changes a ranking.
Content gaps ranks the buyer questions where no brand has become the standard answer. An unclaimed question needs no incumbent displaced, so it is consistently the cheapest ground to take and the fastest to show movement.
Link Opportunities surfaces live journalist and podcast requests matched to your expertise. Two replies a week is a realistic pace for one person, and each accepted reply places you in an article before it is written, on a domain engines already trust.
Track weekly and read the engines separately. Retrieval-led surfaces respond within weeks, and model-weight visibility moves on training cycles, so a change that lifts Perplexity and leaves Claude flat is expected rather than a fault.
Semrush figures come from their SEO and AI Search pricing page, billed annually, checked August 2026.
Additional Semrush users start at $45 a month each, so three people on Pro+ reach $338 a month before a prompt is tracked. Month-to-month billing raises the base further, at $249.95 for Guru and $499.95 for Business. AnswerRank prices the account rather than the seat, and the whole feature set sits on the single $29 plan.
Semrush owns link building at scale. Auditing a competitor's backlink profile properly requires an index built over years of crawling, and we do not operate one. It owns large technical audits for the same reason, since a crawler that walks fifty thousand URLs and classifies every fault is its own engineering problem. It owns paid search research outright, on the strength of historical advertising data no newer product can reconstruct.
AnswerRank owns the answer surface. Tracking five engines continuously, recording which brands each answer names, mapping the citations behind those answers and turning that into a ranked list of fixes is the entire product rather than a module inside one. Teams that need both commonly keep a lower Semrush tier for technical and link work and run AnswerRank for visibility, which still costs less than a single additional Semrush seat.
AnswerRank costs $29 a month with answer engine tracking included on the single plan. Semrush places prompt tracking on Starter and above, which begins at $165.17 a month billed annually and rises to $455.67 on Advanced. For a team whose reason to open Semrush is AI visibility, the cheaper option covers that job at roughly a fifth of the entry price.
Three of ours run without an account. The AI Crawler Reality Check reads your robots.txt and separates the crawlers that train models from the ones that fetch your page while an assistant is writing an answer. The GPT SEO Checker runs one buyer question and returns the live answer with the brands it named. The GEO Rank Tracker places you beside a named competitor across your category. Continuous tracking across many questions and five engines is the paid part.
Threads in r/SEO and r/bigseo divide by budget and by job. Ahrefs wins the backlink argument, Mangools and Ubersuggest win the price argument, and self-hosted rank trackers win when the need is a single narrow metric. Answer engine visibility is a newer thread with less settled advice, which follows from most of those tools having been designed to measure a results page.
Semrush sells AI visibility tracking by prompt volume, from 50 tracked prompts a day on Starter to 200 on Advanced, with MCP access from Starter upward. The difference is scope and price rather than presence. AnswerRank tracks answer engines as the whole product on one $29 plan, with no prompt ceiling to manage. Prices checked August 2026.
A ranked keyword list works as a starting input. Assistants receive questions rather than keywords, so each phrase becomes one or more buyer questions during setup. Add your domain, your brand and two or three competitors, and the first analysis proposes the question set from your own site and category, which you then edit.
Retrieval-driven surfaces move fastest. A new comparison page, a fixed crawler rule or a strong forum answer can change what Perplexity and ChatGPT search cite within one to three weeks, because those engines fetch live pages while composing. Model-weight visibility moves on training cycles measured in months. AnswerRank separates the two so a fast win is not mistaken for a permanent one.
It tracks brand presence inside AI answers, including Google's AI Overviews, across five engines. Classic blue-link position tracking for a large keyword set remains a job for a traditional rank tracker. Teams running both typically keep a smaller Semrush plan for technical and link work.
There is a REST API, a Zapier integration and an MCP server. MCP is the one worth setting up first, since it lets Claude, Cursor or another client query your answer share, citations, content gaps and link opportunities in plain language while you work.
